June Luncheon: Foot Traffic Ahead
Americans – including those who live and work in Hamilton County – are voting with their feet to abandon suburban sprawl, embracing instead walkable urban alternatives.
Think of these walkable town centers – Carmel’s Arts & Design District and Midtown, Fishers’ Nickel Plate District, Westfield’s Grand Junction, and Noblesville’s Riverfront Redevelopment District. Walkable real estate development is on the rise nationwide and it’s outperforming suburban office parks on virtually every metric of fiscal health.
Christopher Leinberger, author of The Option of Urbanism, Investing in a New American Dream, will share research on whether these investments are the right thing to do as he highlights the challenges and opportunities in developing environmentally, socially, and financially sustainable communities.
Leinberger is a resident professor at the George Washington University School of Business, president of LOCUS: Responsible Developers and Investors, and senior fellow at Brookings Institution. He has been named one of the Top 100 Urban Thinkers; is the author of 13 books; and is a contributor to The Atlantic, NPR, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
