FISHERS, Ind. (February 26, 2025) — The Hamilton East Public Library is delighted to welcome award-winning author Varian Johnson to the Fishers Library. Young readers and families are invited to a special author visit at the Fishers Library on Tuesday, March 11, at 5:00 PM. Johnson will be sharing stories, answering questions, and signing books in an engaging and interactive event perfect for elementary-teen readers.

Varian Johnson is the author of several novels for children and young adults, including The Parker Inheritance, which won both Coretta Scott King Author Honor and Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor awards; The Great Greene Heist, an ALA Notable Children’s book and Kirkus Reviews Best Book; and the graphic novel Twins, illustrated by Shannon Wright, an NPR Best Book.

"We are excited to host award-winning author Varian Johnson at our Fishers Branch,” says HEPL Children's Program Coordinator, Allison Kartman. “Hearing from an author firsthand can bring literature to life and help kids connect with the written word in a dynamic way. We hope everyone will come out to hear from this great author and support a local Indy bookstore, Loudmouth Books by buying some of Mr. Johnson's titles. Mr. Johnson will be available after the program to sign and personalize books!"

Opening in the fall of 2025, the DNOVA Creative Center (DCC) will be a vibrant hub designed for high school students to collaborate, learn, and grow. Serving as an after-school space during the week, the DCC will also host private events, workshops, and community gatherings. It will foster creativity, STEM learning, and community engagement.

Your Input Matters

The goal for the new DNOVA Creative Center is to be a beneficial and welcoming space for all. Your thoughts, ideas and suggestions will help shape key features of the center—whether that’s a study space, a podcast room, a mini maker space, or a place for mentoring, tutoring, and social connection. What would be the biggest draw? What specific elements would make these spaces most useful? Your ideas will be instrumental in creating a center that is not only functional, but is also an asset to the Carmel area.

Before our gathering, you’re welcome to tour the DCC space (330 N Rangeline Rd, Carmel, IN 46032) from 4:45 to 5:15 PM. We’ll then take a short walk together (or drive) to COhatch, where dinner and discussion will begin at 5:30 PM.

About Mark Heirbrandt:

Mark Heirbrandt was elected in 2013 to the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners. District 3 represents the Adams, Fall Creek, Jackson, Washington, Wayne, and White River Townships, along with the municipalities of Arcadia, Atlanta, Cicero, Sheridan, and Westfield.

Heirbrandt attended Ben Davis High School where he participated in track & field and football. He was fortunate to receive a Track & Field scholarship to attend the University of Indianapolis where he graduated with a double major in chemistry & biology. Mark even held UIndy’s pole vault school record for several years.

Over the past 23 years, Mark has worked in the water & energy-efficiency business and travels the state working with elected officials to improve the operations of their facilities with energy saving improvements. Mark also served on the City of Westfield Public Board of Works for six years where he was involved in the negotiation and sale of the water utility to Citizen’s Energy Group for $91 million dollars.

Heirbrandt has also utilized his energy experience to assist Hamilton County Building & Grounds implement energy savings improvements to multiple county-owned facilities including an award-winning solar project for the Hamilton County Jail Complex, LED lighting, building automation controls, a natural gas purchase plan, CNG vehicles, and HVAC improvements generating significant energy savings while obtaining over $150,000 in utility rebates.

Heirbrandt was also instrumental in negotiating with INDOT and the Governor’s Office to make improvements to State Road 37 - receiving $100 million dollars to improve traffic along the corridor as well as $150 million dollars in federal funds for other county road and drainage projects.

Heirbrandt has been a resident of Hamilton County for 31 years living in Noblesville, Carmel, and now Westfield. He and his wife Gina have three sons - Blake, Ethan, and Evan. He is a member of Saint Maria Goretti Parish in Westfield and involved in numerous charities like Janus Development, Hamilton County Youth Assistance Program, The Cherish Center, Humane Society of Hamilton County, Boys Scouts, Boys & Girls Club, and Meals on Wheels.

About Christine Altman:

Christine Altman was first elected to the Hamilton County Commissioners in 2003. District 1 represents the City of Carmel and Clay Township.

A native of Ft. Wayne, Altman obtained her undergraduate degree from the Indiana University Kelly School of Business in 1977, with distinction, earning a major in accounting and worked for Price Waterhouse prior to attending law school. She was admitted to the bar in Indiana in 1981, where she graduated Cum Laude. Altman has been in private practice for over 40 years concentrating her efforts in business, probate, and real estate law at Altman Poindexter & Wyatt, Attorneys at Law.

Prior to becoming a County Commissioner, Altman served on the Hamilton County Council. As a commissioner she is actively involved in many state and local boards representing the citizens and taxpayers of the County. Altman is an active member of the Indiana Commission for Women, having previously been appointed chair of the Commission by former Governor Mike Pence. She also serves as the Hamilton County Representative of the Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority (CIRTA) and the US31 Coalition.

Altman serves on and previously chaired the Conner Prairie Museum Board of Directors and volunteered as pro bono legal counsel for the Carmel High School Vocational Building Trades Corporation for 25 years. She was a founder and a former president and dean of the Hamilton County Leadership Academy and seven as a director and treasurer of the Carmel Clay Chamber of Commerce.

Altman and her husband live in Carmel. They have four children and two grandchildren. She enjoys gardening, road trips with her husband, and canoeing and kayaking along the White River in Hamilton County.

About Steve Dillinger:

Steven Dillinger was first elected to the Hamilton County Commissioners back in 1989, making him the longest active re-elected Commissioner in the State of Indiana. He represents District 2 which includes the City of Fishers, City of Noblesville, and both Delaware and Noblesville Townships.

Dillinger attended Noblesville High School where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track for the Millers. He has worked in the insurance business for close to 50 years and still owns and operates S. C. Dillinger & Associates Insurance Agency.

Prior to becoming a County Commissioner, Dillinger served on the Noblesville City Council and Hamilton County Council. As a County Commissioner, he has been instrumental in establishing County-wide zoning, increasing County Parks by more than 1,000 acres, and turning 146th and 236th Streets into major thoroughfares. Dillinger has also overseen construction of the Hamilton County Judicial & Government Center, the Hamilton County Highway Department, the Hamilton County Jail, and the Hamilton County Health Department.

The Indiana Association of County Commissioners recognized Dillinger as the Outstanding County Commissioner in 2019. That same year, he was also honored by former Congresswoman Susan Brooks by the entering of his accomplishments into the Congressional Record in the Library of Congress.

Dillinger and his wife Renee have five children, nine grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. He is Vice President of the Indianapolis Airport Authority, president of the Executive Board of the Noblesville Elementary Football League, and has been a member of the Green Valley Church of Christ his entire life. When he’s not busy serving his community, Dillinger enjoys playing golf, fishing, horseback riding, and traveling, especially to Mazatlan, Mexico.
